The Power Of Scan-To-BIM

An entertainment operator was preparing for a new venue build-out in El Cajon. The team inherited base building drawings, but as is typical for these types of projects, the documentation could not be relied upon as a definitive record of existing conditions. With a fixed lease and millions in upfront capital at stake, a detailed field survey was required to accurately plan layouts, attractions, and system coordination.

Had they relied solely on those drawings, conflicts between attractions and structural conditions would have surfaced during construction. Clearances would have failed, redesigns would have been forced, and the schedule would have slipped. Each mistake carries six-figure consequences.

PISTIL was engaged to verify existing conditions through detailed field measurements, building analysis, and a comprehensive Scan-to-BIM process to establish an accurate digital record of the facility. The scan revealed discrepancies invisible to the naked eye: structural misalignments, clearance variations, and measurement errors that would have derailed the project. By uncovering these issues early, the client avoided late-stage design changes, eliminated potential rework, and preserved the schedule.

Most importantly, they avoided committing capital based on false assumptions.

With a verified BIM record and a clear understanding of existing conditions, the client was able to make a strategic decision early in the process. Rather than committing to six-figure building upgrades in a property they did not own, they chose to pursue an alternative location. This low-commitment, low-cost step eliminated significant downstream risk and preserved capital before procurement and construction began.
